CHANDLER

Every muscle in my body hurts as I lie flat on my back on the mat, breathing heavily. Maybe if I close my eyes she will think I have passed out and let me stop.

“Get your ass up!” A loud whistle is blown near my ear, and I jump at the sound. Opening one eye, I look up at Lilly who is standing over me. “Would you quit if someone was attacking you?”

I shake my head no, not having the energy to speak. Slowly, I get back to my feet with the jump rope in hand.

“Five hundred more double-unders and then we will spar.” I roll my eyes but begin jumping again. The ache in my muscles helps me to forget the pain in my heart. There has still been no word from Xavier, but there also hasn’t been any indication that the men who attacked us on the island are aware of where I ended up, so we are back to the waiting game.

I miss my jump and whip my leg with the speed rope. The sting of pain distracts me and I miss Lilly closing the distance between us. Before I realize what is happening, she sweeps my feet out from under me and is in mount as I lie on the ground.

“You have to pay attention, Chandler. Nobody is going to attack you when you are ready for them.”

When she told me she wasn’t going to go easy on me, it was not a lie. But every time it gets hard, I just have to remember how helpless I felt when the island was attacked. If this is what it takes to be better prepared for the next attack, then I will do it. As long as I am with Xavier, I realize there is a target on my back, and I want to be ready.

“Let’s go again.” I stand up and grab the jump rope. This time when I start to jump, I work on focusing on my surroundings. After I hit seventy, I hear a sound and the next thing I know a foam roller hits me in the back. Spinning to face the threat, I move to the side at the last second, but the end still catches me. I duck as she swings it again, preparing for my next move. Lunging forward, I grab one of Lilly’s legs, sweeping her off her feet, and neutralize her by pulling her into a rear-naked choke. Once it is set, I almost release, but then I remember Xavier always telling me that you train like you would act in a real scenario. Tightening my arms, I sink the choke until Lilly taps.

She lets out a short cough then says, “Better. Much better.” I take the praise and smile as she continues, “Get up. Let’s do it again.”

Taking a deep breath, I ready myself.
